Eric Schmidt : Analyst

Eric is a member of Oxera’s Performance, Productivity & Efficiency team, focusing on cost and performance assessment for water and energy networks. He uses economics and analytical tools to provide insight and solutions to a wide range of client issues, and has worked on projects across price controls in water and energy in various jurisdictions. He has undertaken econometric analysis and other sophisticated methods of benchmarking, and has supported clients through changing regulatory environments.

Before joining Oxera, Eric spent a year as an economist at Severn Trent Water, working on cost assessment for PR24. Prior to this, Eric graduated with an MSc Economics from Durham University.

  • Assessing the performance and efficient expenditure levels of a nationalised water company under different regulatory frameworks (2023–)

  • Estimating the value that a Gas Distribution Network (GDN) produces for consumers through its efficient performance, and designing appropriate incentive mechanisms to encourage future productivity improvements (2023–)

  • Providing top-down evidence to support, validate and critique UK water companies’ expenditure proposals ahead of the PR24 business plan submissions. This included an assessment of companies’ unique operating circumstances that could not be captured in top down models (2023–)

  • Assisting a German gas Distribution System Operator (DSO) in its response to the regulator’s consultation on econometric cost modelling (2023)

  • Supporting multiple UK water and wastewater companies in their response to the regulator’s consultation on econometric cost modelling (2023)
