Following an excellent showing in the Global Competition Review nominations for 2017, we are pleased to announce that Oxera has won ‘Litigation of the year’ for Non-cartel defence and for Non-cartel prosecution, two categories at the GCR Awards event on 28 March.
In the category of ’Litigation of the year—Non-cartel defence‘, Oxera was recognised for its work in defence of MasterCard. Dr Gunnar Niels, Oxera Partner, acted as economics expert for MasterCard in its successful defence against Arcadia Group, Debenhams, Morrisons and nine other retailers (Arcadia & others), who claimed that they had been overcharged for credit and debit card processing fees (multilateral interchange fees) by £437m. More information about our work in this case can be found here.
In the “Litigation of the year — Non-cartel prosecution” category, we were recognised for our work advising Nationwide on its damages claim against South African Airways following a finding of an abuse of dominance, a case that ran from 2012 to 2016. Oxera Partner, Robin Noble, and Principal, Dr Avantika Chowdhury, were key contributors to this case.
Overall, this represents an excellent outcome for Oxera, and we are grateful for the recognition of our high-quality work across our broad and diverse portfolio.
