Bogdan Oprescu : Technical Adviser

Bogdan leads Oxera’s energy modelling practice using PLEXOS and Antares. The main focus of the work is analysing long-term investments (e.g. profitability, viability, impacts of regulation), economic dispatch and unit commitment (e.g. merit order, energy mix, portfolio behaviour), dispatching renewable energy sources and hydro-generation. 

Before joining Oxera, Bogdan worked as a researcher for the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Petten, The Netherlands, and as a market modelling specialist for the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) in Brussels.

professional experience

  • Led the modelling efforts analysing the impact of investment in new nuclear generation in the Czech Republic (2021)

  • Provided expert advice on a project related to the coal phase-out in Germany (2020)

  • Led the market modelling and network modelling teams of ENTSO-E in defining and preparing for the second Bidding Zone Review (2019)

  • Implemented nodal modelling of Central Western Europe for a focus paper assessing market design options in Europe—‘Market Design 2030’ (2019)

  • Defined the structure and data needs of the Pan-European Market Modelling DataBase (PEMMDB) that is used for ENTSO-E reports: ‘Ten Year Network Development Plan’ (TYNDP), ‘Mid-Term Adequacy report’ (MAF), ‘Seasonal Outlook’ (2018)

  • Analysed outputs, reviewed the energy modelling (in PLEXOS) and performed analysis for the site acceptance test of the Bidding Zone Review #1 (2017)
