Aarne Rissanen : Consultant

Aarne works as a quantitative economist and data scientist at Oxera. He has extensive experience of working with data through the whole process—from gathering and processing raw data to producing convincing visualisations and econometric estimates, particularly in the fields of transport and financial services. Aarne is also experienced in conducting complex quantitative analysis across a range of programming languages and software packages. He is an active member of Oxera’s data science and R communities, where his main interests are the exploration and development of data architectures and efficient coding practices.

Aarne holds MPhil and BA degrees in economics from the University of Oxford, and he has recently completed a BSc in computer science from the University of Helsinki. Before joining Oxera, he worked as a senior specialist at the Finnish Ministry of Finance, providing economic advice on a wide range of topics relating to the Finnish labour market, social security system and demographic change.

  • Provided advice to a UK bank on modelling the customer value of its updated credit card product (2020)

  • Provided advice to a regulated UK transport client on how changes in the methodology of an inflation index could affect its estimated weighted average cost of capital (2020)

  • Analysed trade flows of hydrofluorocarbons into and within the EU, investigating whether the patterns provide evidence of illegal trade (2020)

  • Analysed and visualised patterns in the European primary and secondary equity markets for a report prepared for the European Commission DG FISMA (2019–20)

  • Estimated the economic and environmental impacts of alternative district heating pricing options in the Netherland using the Vesta-MAIS simulation model (2019)
