Oxera ranks in top 10 of expert witness firms

The Global Arbitration Review (GAR) 100 Expert Witness Firms’ Power Index 2019 lists Oxera in its top 10

In publishing its annual index, GAR noted that, over the past year, Oxera had doubled its number of hearings and held steady its average claim value (of US$433m), adding:

‘The firm was founded originally by Oxford academics who specialised in energy and regulated industries. But its largest cases now also span mining and construction, as well as investor-state work. Most of the cases we logged featured Min Shi.’

In the past year or so, Oxera has advised on a large number of arbitrations, across a range of sectors including construction, energy, financial services, pharmaceuticals, telecoms and transport.

Highlights from this period include:

  • a tribunal deciding in favour of our client in an LCIA-administered arbitration involving a high-profile dispute between Standard Life Aberdeen and Lloyds Banking Group/Scottish Widows. See here;
  • in another LCIA-administered arbitration, our client being awarded over $1bn in damages. The case involved a multinational energy company and its main subcontractor who was found to have breached its contract while constructing a gas pipeline in Africa;
  • a tribunal deciding in favour of our client in an ICC-administered arbitration in London involving a Middle Eastern private equity firm in a dispute with a company it invested in regarding its financial performance and solvency status.

Commenting on the results, Partner, Dr Min Shi, who leads Oxera’s work in International Arbitration and is listed in Who’s Who Legal Arbitration, said:

‘This is wonderful news and we’re delighted with what we have achieved in this growing area for Oxera. It reflects our commitment to provide compelling and effective expert advice, and performing our work with passion and integrity.’
