Reinder’s areas of expertise are competition policy and regulation, with more than ten years of experience in the financial services sector. He has also managed projects for trade associations including the Association of British Insurers, British Bankers’ Association, Association of Payment Clearing Services, the Finance & Leasing Association, and the Futures and Options Association, in addition to government bodies such as the Financial Services Authority, the Office of Fair Trading and the European Commission. In the field of competition policy, he has worked with a range of clients on mergers (eg, Fortis–ABN AMRO and VocaLink), agreements, abuse of dominance and state aid cases in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. He has worked on studies in various segments of the financial services sector including investment management and brokerage, trading, clearing and settlement of securities, retail insurance, banking, consumer credit, mortgages, payment systems, and pensions. Before joining Oxera in April 2001, he worked as an economist at the Netherlands Central Bank and the Mexican Federal Competition Commission.

- Managed the price monitoring study of trading and post-trading services in 18 financial centres for the European Commission (2008–09)

- Advised Fortis on the merger between Fortis and ABN-AMRO, which was cleared at phase 1 by the European Commission (2007)
- Adviser to a major retail bank in relation to the Competition Commission investigation into Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) (2007–08)
- Post-implementation review of the new regime for soft commission and bundled brokerage arrangements for the FSA (2006 and 2008)
- Study on the assessment of benefits of specific regulation for retail financial services firms for the FSA (2006–07)
- Advised on the successful Voca/LINK merger clearance (2006–07)
- Led an economic assessment on behalf of the ABI, of proposals for personal account pensions in the UK (2006)
- Provided a critique of the European Commission’s report on the inquiry into payment cards for the Royal Bank of Scotland (2006)
- Methodology for assessing the benefits of financial regulation (for the FSA) (2005–06)
- Led a study for the British Bankers’ Association comparing the prices of retail banking services across 11 countries (2005-06)
- Advice to a major UK bank on the OFT Payment Systems Task Force (2005–06)
- Analysis of the waste management sector in Continental Europe for a private equity firm, which used the results of the research to prepare a bid for a waste management company (2005)
- Economic analysis of the direct impact on competition of a merger in the Dutch healthcare sector (2004–05)
